Whether you are an incoming freshman or current Penn State student, the Penn State Equestrian Team encourages riders of all levels, as well as students who have no riding experience, to try out for the team! There is a mandatory pre-tryout meeting in the beginning of September. Tryouts are usually held Labor Day weekend.

How much time does the team require?
Team members are required to attend a weekly meeting, as well as a group lesson that best fits with their academic schedule. If chosen to compete, riders will attend horse shows held on weekends throughout the year. The team also participates in sporadic bonding activities and social events.
How can I get to lessons and horse shows?
Car-pooling is arranged for all lessons and horse shows.
Is it mandatory to horse show?
Although it is not mandatory to horse show, members are required to help with Penn State home show.
Do I need my own horse?
No, Kocher Farms provides all of our wonderful horses for team lessons.
Do I need my own riding equipment?
If you do not have your own helmet, you may borrow one from Kocher. However, we strongly recommend you have your own to assure proper fit and maximum safety. If you do not have riding boots, we recommend you wear a closed toe shoe with a small heel.
Do I need health insurance?
Yes, it is required to have health insurance in order to tryout and ride for the team.
Is it free to join the team?
No. Members are responsible for all lesson, club dues and showing fees.
How many times do we lesson a semester?
We lesson once a week for 12 weeks.
What if I can’t make tryouts?
Fall tryouts are usually held Labor Day weekend. If you are unavailable that day, unfortunately we are unable to accommodate you due to organization of team/farm/horses/transportation. However, you are more than welcome to join as an associate member!
